What is Google Gemini?

Google Gemini is a chat with a language model from Google, an AI program that learned language from huge amounts of text. The service started in March 2023 under the name Bard, according to Google's overview of the Gemini app. Gemini is also the name of the models behind the chat. So the word can mean both the app and the technology.

Gemini helps you with everyday writing and questions:

• Write and improve text, for example an email.
• Summarise a long document.
• Translate and explain.
• Help with code.
• Create images and video.
• Search the web.

Who is Gemini for?

Gemini suits you if you already use Google, for example Gmail, Google Photos, Drive or an Android phone. You need no prior knowledge. Use Gemini for everyday questions, schoolwork, emails and texts at work.

Developers have two routes of their own. Antigravity CLI is Google's coding agent, an AI program that writes and changes code for you. With the Gemini API you build your own programs that use Google's models.

Does Gemini work in Swedish?

Gemini works in Swedish, both when you type and when you speak. Swedish is among the web app's languages on Google's help page on where Gemini is available, at the time of writing.

Voice has more limits. Google's help page for the mobile app says that "Hey Google" is not available in every language. The microphone button always works, though, so tap it and speak.

What can Gemini do?

Gemini on Android, iPhone and the computer

Gemini can replace Google Assistant on Android. When you switch, Gemini becomes the phone's main assistant. You reach Gemini with "Hey Google" or by holding the power button. Smart speakers, displays and TVs keep Google Assistant.

Gemini on iPhone is a regular app from the App Store.

Gemini also comes as an app for the computer. Gemini for Mac arrived on 15 April 2026 and needs macOS 15 or later, according to Google's release notes. The Windows app arrived on 10 September 2026 and needs Windows 10 or later, the same notes show. On Windows you open Gemini with Alt and Space.

Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Google Workspace

Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, Google's video tool, needs a paid plan. Google's plan page says Google AI Plus gives Gemini in Gmail and Vids, and Google AI Pro adds Docs. The features are only available in some languages, Google writes.

With a work or school account, the organisation decides. Google Workspace is Google's office software for companies and schools. Which models and features you get depends on the organisation's Workspace licence, according to Google's help page on models. Ask your IT department before you add work material.

Gemini can bring files from your Google Drive into the chat. You then need to connect Google Workspace to Gemini and have the Keep Activity setting on, according to Google's help page on files. Keep Activity is the setting that saves your chats.

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM has been called Gemini Notebook since 16 July 2026, according to Google's blog post on the name change. The product is the same. Gemini Notebook answers from the sources you add yourself, instead of the whole internet. The address notebooklm.google forwards to notebook.google, and your notebooks sync with the Gemini app.

Gemini Notebook answers questions about your sources and summarises them. Notebook also makes an Audio Overview, a podcast-style conversation about the sources. More than 80 languages work, according to Google's help page for Gemini Notebook.

Gemini Notebook accepts these sources:

• PDF files.
• Web pages.
• YouTube videos.
• Audio files.
• Google Docs and Google Slides.

Models and price

Which models does Gemini have, and which should you pick?

Gemini has four model tiers, according to Google's help page on models at the time of writing. With a Google AI plan you pick the tier in the box below the text field.

Without a paid plan, Gemini picks the model for you. Most prompts then get Flash-Lite, and prompts that need more reasoning may get Flash or Pro, Google writes on the same help page.

Argon is Google's largest model in Gemini. Argon is in the paid plans Google AI Pro and Ultra, according to Google's release notes. Google replaces the models within each tier from time to time. Which models apply right now is on Google's help page on models.

You also choose the thinking level, between Low, Medium and High. High thinks longer and uses more of your allowance.

• Pro takes hard questions and code.

How much does Gemini cost? Is Gemini free?

Gemini is free with a Google account. The free plan has lower limits and a smaller context window, which is how much text Gemini can keep in mind during a chat, according to Google's help page on limits. The context window is measured in tokens. A token is roughly a piece of a word.

Limits refill at regular intervals, and there is also a weekly limit, according to the same help page. Long chats, large files and heavy features use the most. You see how much you have left under Settings, Usage limits at gemini.google.com.

The free plan gives the smallest model and most features, for example image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gemini Notebook, according to Google's plan page. The paid plans give bigger models, higher limits, video, Gemini in Gmail and Docs and more storage. The more expensive the plan, the higher the limits.

At the time of writing, Google AI Plus costs 4.99 dollars a month, Google AI Pro 19.99 dollars and Google AI Ultra from 99.99 dollars, according to Google's US plan page.

Privacy and choice

Is Gemini safe? How to stop your chats being kept

Gemini keeps your chats as long as the Keep Activity setting is on. Google deletes the activity automatically after 18 months, according to Google's Gemini privacy page. You can change that to 3 months, 36 months or never, according to the same page.

Google lets reviewers read a sample of chats to improve its services. Google keeps reviewed chats for up to three years, according to the privacy page, and they are not deleted when you delete your activity. So Google asks you not to enter anything confidential.

You turn off Keep Activity at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. According to the privacy page, Google then keeps future chats for 72 hours and does not train its AI models on them unless you send feedback. A temporary chat works the same way for a single conversation.

Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude?

Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude are AI assistants of the same kind. All three work in Swedish, come as apps and have a free version. Gemini stands apart through its link to Google's own services, such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, Android and Google Search.

Your choice depends mostly on what you already use. If you have Android and Gmail, Gemini is the easiest choice.
